On 17 November, Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and Singapore Xiangqi General Association jointly organised the 12th Zong Xiang Cup National Xiangqi Competition. This aims to promote Chinese culture and Xiangqi as well as increase the understanding and passion of traditional culture among youths.
The competition attracted 165 participants across the island– the youngest being only 6 years old. The participants were split into five categories and after a day of intense duelling, champions from the five categories emerged: Wu Yikai (9 years old) from U9 category, Shao Hanshuo (10 years old) from U12 category, Zhang Qishuo (13 years old) from U16 category, Huang Kaizhe (20 years old) from U21 category and Zhou Jingcheng (22 years old) from Open category.
During the competition, the participants focused fully as they stayed calm and composed. They exhibited extraordinary chess skills and outwitted their opponents. A highlight was when the younger participants amazed everyone with their patience and tenacity. Even when they were hindered by obstacles, they did not give up and persevered to find the way to solve the chess.
Many accompanying parents mentioned that Xiangqi not only has a long history and deep cultural significance but also nurtures their children’s logical thinking and attention while increasing their understanding and sense of belonging to traditional culture. This learning experience is particularly meaningful to youths growing in the digital era.
The 12th Zong Xiang Cup National Xiangqi Competition received immense support from 23 clan associations, Singapore Clan Foundation and Cultural Matching Fund.
