Chasing Dreams: Why Study in China?
The three main speakers were:
- Angelia Soh, a second-year undergraduate International Relations at Peking University
- Tan Kuan Jue Clarence, a first-year Chinese Language and Literature undergraduate of Fudan University and,
- Pek Ning Xuan, a Tsinghua University graduate with a Bachelor of Economics, now pursuing Mphil in Finance and Economics at University of Cambridge
Angelia shared that she wished to step out of her comfort zone, and experience a different culture and way of life, which drew her to China. With her background in H2 Translation, she was exempted from the HSK language assessment, making her application process smoother. She noted that China’s global rise motivated her to better understand its political perspectives and social development, which led her to Peking University.
Clarence, who is passionate in classical Chinese Literature and chose to Major in Chinese Studies, highlighted that he chose Fudan University for its rich heritage and strong Humanities programme. He highlighted the personal growth that came with adapting to life in Shanghai – a dynamic, inclusive city that helped him gain independence and integrate with ease.
For Ning Xuan, she grew up in a Chinese-speaking environment and received the Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP) Scholarship. In Junior College, she studied both H2 translation and H2 Chinese Studies in Chinese. She shared how Tsinghua University’s vibrant curriculum and array of clubs and societies contributed to her growth and achievements. She also hoped to challenge herself and expand her horizons by experiencing the cultural differences between China and Singapore.

A One-of-a-Kind University Experience
The three speakers agreed that studying in China offers a distinctive experience. Angelia mentioned that students have to adjust to long hours and, and lessons were taught entirely in Mandarin – a significant shift for those used to English-based learning. Furthermore, experiencing four seasons and China’s unique education system were eye-opening and enriching. Clarence and Ning Xuan also mentioned that the cost of living in China is relatively low, which provides much convenience to the international students.
During the Q&A session, participants posed thoughtful questions, leading to candid discussions about challenges and strategies.
Clarence outlined two main challenges: adapting both physically and mentally, and managing academic expectations. He encouraged students to stay grounded, connect with fellow international students, and set realistic goals.
Angelia described her large lecture format on International Relations, which lasted up to three hours and required significant adjustment. Over time, she found support and camaraderie among her peers, forming lasting friendships through shared experiences.
Ning Xuan stressed the importance of resilience and high standards, noting the pressure students from top universities often face. She encouraged a positive mindset and embracing challenges head-on.

Why Choose the SFCCA Scholarship?
When asked why they applied for the SFCCA scholarship, all three speakers highlighted its flexibility and the strength of the SFCCA Scholars Network (SSN).
Angelia appreciated the scholarship’s flexibility in arranging work attachment and the fact that it carries no bond obligation. During her work attachment, she gained editorial skills during her work attachment, and pointed out that scholars had the chance to take part in the planning of large-scale events, like “River Hongbao”, which provided practical insights. She resonated with SFCCA, which was to cultivate bilingual abilities, and hoped to serve as a bridge between Singapore and China.
Clarence valued the mentorship and valuable guidance offered by the SSN, which helped him chart his academic path and future development. He also hopes to leverage SFCCA’s platform to contribute to the sustainable development of the local Chinese culture.
Ning Xuan described SSN as a warm and supportive family. Her involvement in event planning during her work attachment period deepened her understanding of the local Chinese community’s operations and broadened her horizons.
Two additional scholars, Kelly Ong and Tang Xiaotong also joined the session to respond to participant queries and share about their internship experience at SFCCA.
Kelly shared that she was involved in overseeing video editing during her online work attachment, event registration, and onsite coordination for the “River Hongbao” event. These hands-on experiences honed her communication and organisational skills significantly.
Xiaotong spoke about her involvement in organising events such as the Scholars Sharing Session and the Spring Reception, which helped her better understand how the local Chinese community functions.

The Bilingual Edge: Expanding Career Prospects
Ning Xuan highlighted the bilingual and bicultural advantage international students gain in China. While lessons are conducted primarily in Mandarin, students also encounter technical terms in English, and often engage with international peers using English. This bilingual environment strengthens one’s language proficiency and allows one to stay competitive in future career prospects.
In the final segment, participants joined different breakout rooms based on their university of interest, where they engaged in focused discussions with scholars. Many shared that the session gave them clearer direction and had a clearer picture of pursing studies in China.
Applications for the SFCCA Scholarship are now open. Interested applicants should submit their application before 10 July.
